My poem “Born at Sea” has been published in Pennsylvania Bards Western PA Poetry Review 2025.
I originally wrote “Born at Sea” for Eastern Sea Bards, which I did get accepted into (albeit for another poem). This one is a departure from my normal poetry in that it’s written as a traditional Celtic folk poem. It’s about the Selkie, which are mythological sea creatures/people.
Born at Sea
While the sun yet sleeps
Before the dawning day
I slip my moorings
To sail away
A seagull's cry
Through the hushed black sky
The sea does call
And that is why
That is why…
I must brave the murk
No sight no sound
Beneath the waves
Where the Selkie lurk
My heart sings true
So I must try
For I have yearned
And that is why
That is why…
I swim far out to sea
To see my kind
For they have called
Called out to me
Time drifts by
Down in the deep
Where the Selkie hide
And that is why
That is why…
I answer their call
To join the sea folk
Where time stands still
And my heart does fall
I give up the lie
For the truth I know
I was born at sea
And that is why
That is why…
